Surgical Management of the Elbow and Wrist
Lee Kwang-Hyun

Abstract
Successful treatment of any condition involving the elbow and wrist joints requires an accurate diagnosis. To achieve this, emphasis is placed on clinical aspect and surgical treatment. Most common conditions associated with swelling and around the elbow are arthritis and epicondylitis. There are three primary patterns of arthritis affecting the elbow. Each has distinct characteristics and natural histories and rheumatoid arthritis is the most frequent type, with the majority of patients having bilateral disease. Tenosynovitis affecting the upper extremity is a general term referring to painful symptoms emanating from tendon or their adjacent tissue. Trigger finger, De Quervain¡¯s disease and epicondylitis are three of the most common upper extremity manifestations of tenosynovitis. Rheumatoid arthritis of the wrist and hand is common, debilitating disease that affects approximately 1% of the population. Patients typically present with joint pain, stiffness, and swelling with generalized fatigue. Some patients have a disease presentation limited to several joints while others have a more global presentation and a rapidly progressive disease course.
